Tiwa Savage, Super Talented Singer-Songwriter, Performer and Actress – Nigeria

Tiwa Savage is an awesome Nigerian singer-songwriter, performer and actress, who is currently among the top 10 richest celebrities in Nigeria. She is signed to Sony and Mavin Records, and is famous for writing some very popular tracks, such as ‘Collard Greens & Cornbread’, which she co-wrote with Fantasia; a song which earned the American artist a Grammy nomination in 2010!

In 2013, Tiwa released her debut studio album ‘Once Upon a Time’. She usually sings in english and Yoruba, and she has earned herself an MTV Africa Music Award, two The Headies awards, a Channel O Music Video Award, a Nigeria Music Video award and two City People Entertainment Awards, as well as various others.

Tiwa was born in Lagos, and moved to London with her family when she was 11 years old. Her multicultural upbringing, due to her relocating from Nigeria to London, and from there to the USA, helped her grow and evolve her wonderful, strong personality. She studied Business Administration at the University of Kent, and soon afterwards she got a job at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

In the meantime, however, she had already been doing backup vocals for George Michael when she was only 16, and also sang for other artists, such as Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, and Ms. Dynamite, to name a few. As for live performances, she has shared the stage with Sting, 50 Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Robbie Williams and Destiny’s Child, among others!

She graduated from the Berklee College of Music at the age of 27, while simultaneously participating in the X Factor UK show, during which she was having trouble with adjusting to being in the spotlight. She advanced to the final 24, and had a hard time coping when the judges told her she would not be getting through to the final 12. Tiwa Savage seems to strive to be strong and to inspire her admirers to do the same in their lives. Her professional music degree, as well as her interraction with the younger students at college, who encouraged her with their passion and love for art, eventually helped her get over the stress of transitioning from being a backup vocalist to becoming a lead singer.

In 2009 Tiwa Savage was signed to Sony, in a music deal that led to her writing for various other artists, such as Babyface, Kat Deluna, Fantasia Barrino, Monica and Mýa. She also wrote Jaicko’s ‘Oh Yeah’, featuring Snoop Dogg, and Kat Deluna’s ‘Push Push’, featuring Akon and David Guetta! Tiwa Savage also lent her voice to Whitney Houston, for her album ‘I Look To You’. Nowadays, Tiwa Savage and her manager and husband Tunki ‘Tee Billz’ Balogun have established their own label imprint.

In 2011 she co-hosted the Nigerian Idol show, and also acted for the first time in the stage adaptation of ‘For Coloured Girls’.

The multi-talented star signed an endorsement deal with MTN Nigeria worth about N30 million, as well as other endorsement deals with Pepsi, Forte Oil and Maggi.

Tiwa Savage has worked with many young people’s empowerment and breast cancer screening programs in Nigeria, and has also helped raise a large sum for an organization that built schools in her hometown.
