African Millionaires: Naushad Merali

This is a continuation of a series featuring millionaires across Africa who have turned heads with their dynamic approaches in the business, oil, and technology industries.



Naushad Merali is the CEO and Chairmen of Sameer Group of Companies, an investment company involved in various sectors including financial services, construction, energy, agriculture, export processing zones, and transport in Kenya. He is also the founder of the Kenyan mobile service Kencell and founded Vivendi, a French media company. He is famously known for his business deal in which he convinced Vivendi to sell its 60% stake in the company for $230 million, then an hour later sold the company to Celtel for $250 million.

Merali has served as director on various boards including Ryce Motors, Celtel International B.V.,  Zain Africa B.V, the World Economic Forum (Switzerland), the Conference Board (New York), and the International Who’s Who of Professionals.

To give back to the community, Merali and his wife founded the Zarina and Naushad Merali Foundation where they have donated Ksh 100 million to the Kenyatta National Hospital Day Care Centre and offered financial assistance to orphans and underprivileged students notably at the Starehe Boys Centre among others.
