– Solange Knowles And Her Love Affair With African Fashion –
Sister to one of today’s biggest pop stars, Solange Knowles has long established herself as a cultural and fashion icon in her own right – she is a bonafide fashionista! No longer the little girl hanging on to big sister Beyonce’s coat tails, she’s made a name for herself as a pop princess socialite who jet sets around the world deejaying and singing her own brand of music. If you follow the fashion enthusiast one thing is glaringly apparent, she loves prints. So, it is no surprise that after travelling to the African continent she fell in love with the rich variety of Ankara and lace offerings, staples in the African fashion world. She wears them so often now they have become somewhat of a trademark fitting in quite perfectly with her luscious signature natural tresses.
Her travels to Africa have, no doubt, influenced her fashion sense, like the typical fashion forward Africanista she has no problems mixing bold prints and standing out in a crowd. She is inspiring a whole generation of youngsters to take chances and experiment more with the current African trends. But, that’s not all she’s doing. Earlier this year in March the empress of prints partnered with Italian fashion and denim company, Diesel, and Ali Hewson and Bono’s fashion brand, EDUN, for their launch of Studio Africa. The denim line which will be based and manufactured organically in Africa from cotton grown in Uganda. The main goal behind the genius of Studio Africa is promote trade and open the door to the many economically sustainable opportunities on the African continent. Kudos to Solange for accepting the challenge as face and voice of the brand.
“My love for African fashion, music and art runs deep to my core and has been a significant source of inspiration to me as an artist. I’m constantly being exposed to such innovative African talent so I’m excited that Diesel + EDUN is celebrating that extraordinary creativity through Studio Africa and taking me along for the journey!” ~ Solange Knowles
