– Let’s Talk About The Reemergence Of Dandies And The Gentlemen’s Lounge –
The Congolese call them “Les Sapeurs” – French for Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes (The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People) or in other words fantastically dressed men who have married the art of being gentlemen to their love of fashion. The emergence of the dandy dates back to the 1700s as an affront to the English and French aristocracy yet distinguishable enough not to be considered as part of the sans-culottes. These meticulously dressed men walked the streets of London and Paris with the airs of the aristocracy but without the arrogance or the pretentiousness.
In 1836 Thomas Carlyle wrote in “The Dandiacal Body” as part of the novel Sartor Resartus:
“A Dandy is a clothes-wearing man, a man whose trade, office and existence consists in the wearing of clothes. Every faculty of his soul, spirit, purse, and person is heroically consecrated to this one object, the wearing of clothes wisely and well: so that the others dress to live, he lives to dress … And now, for all this perennial martyrdom, and poesy, and even prophecy, what is it that the Dandy asks in return? Solely, we may say, that you would recognise his existence; would admit him to be a living object; or even failing this, a visual object, or thing that will reflect rays of light.”
Throughout the years there has been pockets of time where we have witnessed the rise and fall of dandyism globally; long gone are the days of The Great Gatsby era but the love of fashion – of mixed textures, smashing threads, great fit, the perfect glove, the correct color palette – has never died. American male fashion as of late has been wrought and overrun with casual and street wear with its accompanying arrogance but at last here comes the reemergence of the dandy led by young confident black men who often are at the forefront of emerging trends.
AbuUmar “Uthman” Jamboria Jalloh of Uthman’s Men’s Style and The Gentlemen’s Lounge is one such gentleman and he has established a social media presence dedicated to the return of dandyism. If you like what you see here and you can also follow he and his fellow dandies on their Instagram page.
